Focused on the materiality of art - the transfiguring use of materials - we will examine the artistic strategy associated with the installation The Earth as Event exhibited at the Amadeo de Sousa Cardoso Museum, in order to think about new relationships between art and the Earth, the ultimate horizon of human experience. Installing tonnes of charcoal in the shallows of the ground/stone implies an action in situ, experiencing and transforming the geographical, architectural and spiritual specificity of the host site, in a position where the installation produced implies a kind of folding of space-time, and the insertion of those who visit it creates new, politically active ways of thinking/feeling. The materials on display, in their geological nature of substance, are endowed with a unique history that links coal to mining and energy production, the basis of modern industrialization. This cold, black coal, being the effect of nature's millennia-long work, invisibly contains energy and light that can be put to more human uses - energy that nourishes life and illuminates it. [...].
