This essay proposes a psychoanalytic reading of the film Autumn Sonata (1979), directed by Ingmar Bergman, a filmmaker renowned for his singular approach to exploring the human soul through intense close-ups and the expressive use of light and shadow -elements that often reveal the characters’ innermost selves. The work focuses on the film’s central core: the troubled relationship between mother and daughter, and how these wounds originate in childhood and persist into adulthood, highlighting the impact of maternal care on the daughter’s healthy development. It emphasizes how the process of individuation and the construction of self-image, reflected in the mirror, can be profoundly compromised, influencing the formation of low self-esteem and latent insecurity in relation to others.
