Call for Papers No. 12 - Vol. 2 - Deadline: September 15, 2026
For issue no. 12 of the journal Cinema & Território, the central theme will be ‘Authorship vs. Algorithms: Algorithmic Curation’, with the aim of encouraging a wide range of contributions whose topics span various academic fields relating to cinema and the new challenges of the 21st century, regardless of the genre or field of study that shapes the way we view the screen.
The following thematic areas are suggested for Issue 12:
- The algorithm as curator:
o Recommendation, personalisation and ranking systems.
o Collaborative filtering vs. predictive models.
o The ‘invisible hand’ of the interface.
o The algorithm as a new cultural gatekeeper.
- Platforms, infrastructure and power:
o Attention and retention economies.
o Opacity of selection criteria.
o Catalogue concentration and visibility monopolies.
o Case studies on services such as Netflix, YouTube, TikTok or MUBI.
- Viewer experience and subjectivity:
o Filter bubbles and extreme personalisation.
o Being ‘programmed’ by the feed.
o Serendipitous discovery vs. predictive consumption.
o Curation as the construction of cultural memory.
We welcome submissions ranging from conventional approaches to simple experimental and avant-garde explorations. We invite researchers and artists to submit proposals for original research articles, reviews, interviews, essays and other alternative formats.
